Major Kenneth E. Wilkes has six years of service in the Tennessee State Guard and is currently serving as Regiment S-1 (Personnel Administration) Officer. He previously served as Engineering Platoon Leader and Assistant Regiment S-1 Officer. He retired in 2005 as a Distinguished Research and Development Staff Member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and is currently a consultant at ORNL. Previously he was a research engineer-physicist at Owens-Corning Fiberglas, the Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL-White Oak, MD). At NOL, he worked on anti-submarine warfare. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University, where he graduated with distinction, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa national honorary society, and earned varsity letters as manager of intercollegiate sports teams. He also holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, an M.S. in Physics from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from The Ohio State University. He has also done graduate work in business administration at The Ohio State University and in metallurgical engineering and computational fluid dynamics at the University of Tennessee. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Testing and Materials and of the International Thermal Conductivity Conference. He is registered as a Professional Engineer (Retired) in the State of Ohio, has the Basic MEMS certification, and a General Class HAM radio license. He is married, has two children and three grandchildren, and resides in Farragut, TN.

Duty Description:

The S1 is responsible for officer personnel management, unit strength management, legal administration, morale activities, and a multitude of administrative tasks that relate directly to all personnel in the regiment.
