Regiment Public Affairs Officer


CPT Allen Bray retired after a career of more than 40 years in military and commercial broadcasting. The father of three, he resides in Sevier County with his wife, Nyla. CPT Bray holds a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Memphis, and a Master’s in Education from Lincoln Memorial University.

U.S. Military: Specializing in communications, broadcast operations and public affairs, CPT Bray retired as a chief petty officer in 1988 after 20 years in the U.S. Navy. He served in Puerto Rico, Antarctica, naval training activities at Great Lakes, Illinois and Millington, Tennessee, and as chief-in-charge of Navy broadcast detachments on Diego Garcia and at the Naval Air Station in Sigonella, Sicily. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, Antarctic Service Medal, five awards of the Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Expert Pistol Ribbon.

Duty description:

The regiment PAO is responsible for understanding and fulfilling the information needs of the regiment, the TNSG community, and the civilian public. The PAO advises and informs the commander of the public affairs impact and implications of planned operations, or those in progress. The PAO serves as the commander’s spokesman for all communication with external media.

The PAO also provides for the aggressive dissemination of positive relationship-building information about Tennessee State Guard missions, activities, and vital contributions to Tennessee communities and to the state itself. He/she also acts as clearing house for all information that flows from the regiment to civilian organizations or individuals including any form of news media. As stated above, the PAO will normally serve as the primary TNSG/regiment spokesperson to the media, general public, or to any organization or individual outside the Tennessee State Guard.

Again, the PAO must approve any information from any TNSG unit or individual member that is destined to be released to the public in any form and by any method.
